Information and communications technology (ICT
) is a key technology in the future-safe development of society. In this regard, Deutsche Telekom sees itself as a technological innovator. Our research into new technologies and development of innovative products and services are vital in helping to shape a powerful infrastructure for today’s knowledge and information society. The benefit to customers is at the heart of all our development work.
The Deutsche Telekom Laboratories are one of the leading research and development institutes for new ICT.
Deutsche Telekom Laboratories – Research in a Public Private Partnership.
Deutsche Telekom Laboratories is the Group’s central research and development unit, and is renowned as one of the world’s leading research and development institutions for new ICT. It is an integral part of the company, based within the Product & Innovation department, as well as being an affiliated institute of the Technical University of Berlin with four endowment professorships. The Public Private Partnership concept helps to forge close links between industry and academia. Deutsche Telekom Laboratories focuses primarily on topics and new technologies that are expected to be rolled out or market-ready within eighteen months to five years.
The successful transfer of results is our main objective.
The successful transfer of research results and innovations into T-Home, T-Systems and T-Mobile is the main objective of R&D work at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories. For example, the results from the research project “Generation 50+” were incorporated directly into the design of the cordless, energy-efficient Sinus A201 telephone.
Qiro and Zimory – two pioneering spin-offs.
Some research results lead to their own spin-offs. In 2008, one of the products developed by Deutsche Telekom Laboratories was the cell phone software “Qiro”. This mobile community displays the owner’s current location, or that of registered friends or the nearest café or cinema, on an interactive map on the cell phone. On January 3, 2008 Qiro GmbH was designated a “Ausgewählter Ort 2008” (Landmark 2008) in the nationwide innovations competition “Deutschland – Land der Ideen” (Germany – Land of Ideas).
Alongside “Qiro”, in the year under review, Zimory GmbH’s research findings also led to a number of concrete new services and products: Zimory was the world’s first company to develop an international Internet platform for trading in IT infrastructure resources. Among other things, this helps to reduce carbon emissions, representing an important contribution in the current era of climate change.
